I began by creating curves inspired by a combination of Church’s Oslo and the Nike Vapor Street. The large cutouts are quite functional as they provide a level of added flex and breathability. Once the basic shape was digitally sculpted, 3d scans were taken of my own feet to get a baseline for user testing. I happen to be sample size 9.5. Once the shoe was drawn in the computer, I could try it on digitally before printing even began. This gave me a jumpstart in finding the right fit and is a technique to create bespoke shoes for any foot’s curvature in the future. As printing began, I focused on the final and most important variable, gravity. I created many iterations, editing my settings slightly each time, with limited variables. The goal: to find the perfect material density needed to offer a balance of squish for comfort, but firmness for structural integrity. I set the rule for myself that the chain of five folds could not be broken or twisted to change the shape. Only the relationships of the folds could create different configurations. Finding that I attempted to control too many variables every time I started a new series of folds, I looked for relationships in the sections. I observed that sides B and C were equal to the longest side E. Sides D and F could be made equal, creating a flat base when the structure was set up as a table. Side A needed to be a support brace and just long enough to hold side F in any configuration. One advantage of having equivalent and equal sides is greater ease of manufacturing. Parts could be interchangeable and easily configured for production runs. While the generated nodes were aesthetically very organic, they took a long time to print. Collision detection was added after this version for adaptive length finding. Another drawback of this version is that the thin walls of the nodes caused cracking under load. The method of inserting the nodes into the dowels was added to reduce the points of failure and print material yield. Print time is also cut down to 10 hours instead of 2 days for the same structure. Aesthetically, V2 allows the wood to take center stage and gives a floating look to each node transition. The next step is to print the nodes in a flexible material such as TPU. This offers stronger and more durable properties. Under load, they could act as a suspension system with stretch and resilience. I programmed in a lock that only lets you select seeds with the same profile, if a dissimilar seed is selected, the option briefly turns red and a message lets the user know that the seed is incompatible.
